Since the reform and opening up, floating population in China increased rapidly, and the scale has reached230million people in2011. Population movements becomea prominent feature of this stage of China’s economic, social, demographic transitionprocess. Shanghai, as the most developed cities, is one of the most attractivedestinations for the floating population. The data showed that, in2011the number offloating population in Shanghai has reached over900million. The young floatingpopulation, not only delayed the process of aging of Shanghai, reduced the degree ofaging and dependency burden of the urban population, but also to provide sufficientlabor power to support the rapid development of Shanghai’s economic.Seeking higher economic level is the main motive of the floating population inShanghai. The economic position of the floating population has become the researchfocus of the academic community. For depicting the economic situation of the floatingpopulation more intuitively and accurately, this paper would introduce the concept ofeconomic integration in the research on social integration, and use survey data toconstruct comparable, comprehensive economic integration index of floatingpopulation.First, this paper would build a systematic, structured target system of economicintegration on the basis of previous research, which to provide the basic tools foranalysis and index calculation of the economic situation. Then, according to the target system, it use the comparative method to analysisthe economic level differences between floating population and the householdpopulation. Then there is the key focus. First it would draw absolute economic integrationindex of the floating population and household population by factor analysis, and getrelative economic integration index by dividing. And then, analyze factors affectingthe economic integration index quantitatively and qualitatively. Finally, the article would present policy suggestion to improve the situation, aiming at the factors that affect economic integration of the floating population. Thisis the ultimate realization of the purpose of this study. The data mainly used in this article is survey data of Shanghai’s floatingpopulation and household population in2009. Through a combination of theoreticaland empirical analysis, I found that the economic level gap between floating population and household population is still large. Human capital and institutionalenvironment lead to low levels of economic integration, and the householdregistration system’s reform is the fundamental measure to promote economicintegration of the floating population in Shanghai.
