With the rapid development of the reform of basic education in China, autonomouslearning has become the focus of the education. Thus, it is one of the teaching objectives forthe modern education to change the idea of the traditional teaching, follow the New EnglishCurriculum Standard, arouse students’ interest, put the students back to the center of the classand develop students’ ability of lifelong and autonomous learning. The thesis, taking thestudents in Anshan No.27middle school as an example, discussed the development ofautonomous learning in English teaching in junior middle school through the questionnairesand examinations.The thesis is composed of five chapters. Background and significance of the study andthe structure of the thesis were discussed in Chapter One.Chapter Two is the literature review. In this part, the writer mainly elaborated thedefinition of autonomous learning, theoretical bases for autonomous learning and learningstrategies.Chapter Three is the research design. The writer raised research questions and hypothesisin this part. Participants, research instruments and procedures were also elaborated in thispart.Chapter Four is the data analysis and discussions. The writer made a study aboutstudents’ autonomous learning through questionnaires and exams, collected and analyzed thedata. The writer illustrated the factors that affect the students’ autonomous learningaccordingly.Chapter Five is the conclusion. In this part, the writer discussed major findings, theimplication of the study, the limitation of the study and recommendation for further study.
