Discipline construction is the core of the development of institutions of higher education. Studies into the construction of state key engineering disciplines are of important and practical significance to improve national industrial development, strengthen core competitiveness of colleges and universities, enhance the overall level of disciplines and provide references for setting up the evaluation system of state key disciplines. This paper has discussed the successful experience and the existing problems on the basis of analyzing the special characters of the construction of state key engineering disciplines, in order that pertinence suggestions can be proposed to enhance the overall level and international competitiveness of disciplines.Firstly, this paper defines essential concepts of disciplines, discipline construction and state key discipline, ensures the research subject in this paper is the state key construction of engineering discipline evaluated and set by the Ministry of Education. Discipline construction refers to specific social activities of systematic and comprehensive construction of talent team, supporting conditions, talent fostering, scientific research, management system, operation system, academic environment et al.Secondly, the discipline construction of engineering and art and that of engineering and science are compared to find out special characters of the construction of state key engineering disciplines, including mainly three aspects of solving major problems existing in national economic production, cultivating high-level creative engineering talents and setting up high-level scientific bases.Thirdly, this paper analyzes the present situation of state key construction of engineering disciplines using the literature method, the inductive method and the statistical method; describes achievement made in overall development, talent team construction, scientific competence, talent fostering and international communication; raised problems of the uneven distribution of state key engineering disciplines, low level of clustering development, lack of leading figures, ineffective of innovation teams and (?)-standard management system; and explores reasons of these problems like in(?)ed effects of state policies, lack of long-term planning of discipline construction, select(?) of leading academic figures, incomplete training system, unsound evaluation system of:inovative teams, lack of policy and theory guidance in the management of state key discipline construction. At last, four specific measures are proposed to strengthen and perfect the construction of state key engineering disciplines based on existing problems and reasons, namely strengthening policy guidance and optimizing the distribution of state key engineering disciplines; improving long-term discipline planning and the development of disciplinary cluster; fostering leading academic figures and enhancing the effects of the construction of innovation teams; perfecting management system and improving efficiency of state key discipline construction. This paper also summarizes the achievement and deficiency of the research and puts forward advice of further research.
