Martial arts develops rapidly in the College, especially after beingregarded as a course of physical education, it spreads and developsfurther due to the normal feature of physical education. Studentsgraduate from the physical education will largely become PE teacherin middle and premier schools, which makes martial arts develops tothe lower layer schools and spreads more widely. At this time, theawareness of the Physical Education Majors to martial arts isparticularly important, and it will affect the effect of further spread ofthe martial arts. Therefore, it is very necessary to investigate andresearch the Physical Education Majors’ awareness to the martialarts. What’s more, the awareness level of physical education majorsin high institutions is influenced by many factors such as the martialarts curriculum, teaching arrangements, the quality of teachers, thestudents’ interests as well as the differences in the martial arts’developmental process; hence the relevant factors need a certainstudy as well. The methods of literature, mathematical statistics, comparativeanalysis and the questionnaire method are used to investigate and study the awareness level of martial arts of Physical Educationmajors in high institutions in Shanxi province and factors affectingstudents’ cognitive. A better understanding of the students’ martialarts cognitive status and factors impacting students’ martial artscognitive could provide a reference for future college martial artsteaching to promote the development of martial arts education in highinstitution and dissemination of the martial arts culture. The study results indicate that: on the whole, the main cognitiveapproach to martial arts of students is teachers, however, for thosestudents who haven’t had martial arts courses in their college life, themajority approaches are network, movie, film and television works. This situation reflects the deletion of education in martial arts instudents’ education before college and the low cognitive level ofstudents for the origin and evolution of the martial arts. For the genusof the martial arts, the majority of students attribute the martial artsas a cultural, which shows a high degree of cognitive awareness;however, some deviations exist as well in terms to the essence ofmartial arts. The awareness and recognition of the student of martialarts function tend to “moral education function” and “fitnessentertainment function”, which reflects the new requirements formartial arts in today’s society. The “fitness and entertainment value”and “cultural value” are more attractive for students in terms to thehighlight value of future development of martial arts, which reflectsthe students’ value orientation of the martial arts and the reality thatthe fighting value of martial arts is marginalized in the development ofthe contemporary. Most students think that the martial virtue is “very important” or “important”, which shows a high degree of cognitive. The "culture" isbelieved to be the most important factor to discriminate martial artsand fighting techniques in other countries, which shows a high degreeof cognitive. The awareness and recognition of the philosophicalthinking method of the martial arts are high, but when it in terms tothe concrete manifestation of the philosophical thinking of themartial arts, the awareness level turns to be lower, which reflectsstudents’ shortcomings in culture connotation and deficiencies andshortcomings in teaching process in this area. The high acceptantlevel of student in martial arts’ function of enhancing nationalcohesion reflects that the martial arts is unique to China. There are many factors impact the martial arts teaching in highinstitutions: First, that students like martial arts “generally” or“mostly” shows that students are interested in martial arts, however, the majority of students are sure that they are “not interested incontents taught in martial arts course”. This phenomenon shows theshortcomings of martial arts teachers in stimulating students’interest and adopting proper teaching methods as well as theuniversities’ failure in choose reasoning textbooks and teachingcontent; a minority of students do not like martial arts because it is“not practical” and “practice time is too long”,“not practical” reflectsthat the martial arts pursuits performance more than combative andpractical functions in its development process, while “practice time istoo long” reflects students’ ignorance of the long-term nature of themartial arts. Second, the attitude to the teachers’ professional qualityof the students reflects the deficient for high-quality teachers in highinstitutions. Third, the survey data among students reflects ubiquitous problems in the college martial arts teaching such as littleintroduction of the culture connotation of martial arts, pooratmosphere in the martial arts course and little or even no martialarts theory courses.
