Anxiety as a significant affective variable in language learning has attracted more attentions and interests in the1970s. Numerous studies on foreign language anxiety focused on adults, the empirical studies on children are very sparse. This present study is expected to provide an investigation on anxiety from learners in primary schools. The study aims to contribute a better understanding of children’s anxiety in English class in primary schools and to analyze the causes of the anxiety and help to provide some useful strategies.This study is conducted both quantitatively and qualitatively. This subject set100students in Yuntougu primary school in Chengyang District in Qingdao as a study object. The research aims to investigate the following questions1) What’s the general tendency of students’anxiety in primary schools?2)What are the differences in language anxiety between primary students of different gender and different character?3) What’s the correlation between language anxiety levels and the primary school students’English achievements?4) What are the factors that can provoke the primary school students’language anxiety? In the qualitative research,8interviewees whose anxiety level is high are selected.Major findings of the study are as follows:There does exist English learning anxiety among the primary school students in English class. The result of the quantitative study show significantly negative correlation between students’English proficiency and anxiety. English examination, self-esteem, fear of negative evaluation and communication apprehension are the three important causes that provoke students’language anxiety.There are some implications according to the teaching experience and the condition of primary school students. Firstly, teachers should adopt various evaluation modes. Teachers should advise the students pay more attention to the learning process, enjoying the interest and successful of learning process. Secondly, teacher should build up the students’confidences. Confidence and anxiety are mutual repulsion. Confidence can release the students’anxiety. Thirdly, set up a harmonious learning atmosphere. The harmonious atmosphere can make the students more relaxed. Fourthly, teachers make the students to be interested in English learning. If the students are interested in learning English, they can do it happily. Fifthly, teachers should use cooperative learning method. In the process of cooperative learning, learners can depend on each other、overcome one’s weaknesses by acquiring others’ strong points.In the teaching process, teachers may take students as teaching center in class. Teachers may watch students’activity and use every kinds of teaching method to help them to overcome English learning anxiety.
