Listening is one of the basic skills in foreign language learning. Listening teachingplays a more and more important role in English teaching. Considerable attention hasbeen paid to the pedagogic method of improving students’ listening proficiency. Muchwork has been done at home and abroad to look for alternatives to improve students’listening competence. The creative points of this thesis lie in the attempt made by theauthor to probe the feasibility of the application of conversational implicature inEnglish listening teaching in senior high schools through a case study.The experiment is conducted in the Attached School of Shandong NormalUniversity. The subjects are91students from Class One and Class Two in Grade One.Class One is chosen as Experimental Group (EG) and Class Two is used as ControlGroup (CG). In the experimental class, I tried to explain the Theory of ConversationalImplicature in listening teaching, focusing on the development of the students’listening ability as well as their linguistic competence. While in the control class,during the teaching process, the author mainly taught in the traditional way, focusingon the acquisition of linguistic knowledge. The instruments for the experiment aretests and interview, a combination of quantitative and qualitative. The experimentlasted one semester for20weeks. Each teaching class had one period per week.According to the analysis of the results, we know that improving teaching modeand cultivating students’ listening strategies can enhance students’ English listeningcomprehension ability. Therefore, the experiment proves conversational implicaturetheory can serve as an effective teaching approach used in the listening practice.Pedagogical Implications: In the real teaching process, the teacher shouldarrange the contents properly, choose the teaching method logically and deal with thetime wisely. Likewise, under the guidance of teachers, the students should cultivateand improve their listening abilities by learning pragmatic theories, accumulatingcultural background knowledge and semantic knowledge. Besides, the thesis also has implications for improving the teaching mode and strengthening the practicability ofteaching.
