English listening has been problematic to many students and teachers in China. Thetraditional teaching method has occupied listening instruction for a long time, not onlyteachers but also students have already been fed up with it. Students can’t achieve thesatisfying scores in the test, let alone develop their learning ability. In order to change thecurrent situation, this study is conducted to explore the effectiveness of applying the teachingmethod based on the the Conversational Implicature Theory to English listening, and therewill be an improvement in students’ listening comprehension ability and the pragmaticcompetence. The research is carried out on the basis of the Conversational Implicature Theory bytesting120students who come from the No.15Middle School in Jining. The pre-test isdistributed to the participants, then the results of which are analyzed. After two months’training, all the students of the experimental class and the control class are tested by thepost-test. By comparing the results of the pre-test and the post-test, the author finds that theConversational Implicature Theory has a positive effect on the grades of the experimentalclass, but the control class doesn’t make any progress. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is introduction. It introduces thebackground of the study, the significance of the study and the basic framework of the study.Chapter two is the literature review. It elaborates the theoretical basis of the study, includingGrice’s the Conversational Implicature Theory and cooperative principle. Chapter three is anexperimental study. In this chapter, the hypothesis is introduced and how to design thisexperiment is discussed. Chapter four is the results and discussions. The results of theexperiment prove the hypothesis that the English teaching model based on the ConversationalImplicature Theory can improve students’ listening comprehension ability.
