Language transfer is a common phenomenon in foreign languages learning process. It isdue to the similarities and differences between the target language and other acquired foreignlanguage. It is easier to occur to the language transfer in the second language acquisition,especially under the influence of native language habits and thinking. With the increasinglyfrequency of economic globalization and international exchanges, linguists and teachers paymore attention to the applications and interpersonal skills of English language learning. In theaspects of language learning and language skills’ improvement, vocabulary is the constructionof the cornerstone of the language building and the foundation of the language. No matterhow pure the pronunciation you master, without words properly expressing various meanings,it is difficult to achieve language communication. The main interference Negative transfer ofEnglish is the English vocabulary, due to its flexible expression and idioms. It directly affectsthe accuracy of the information transfer in the language output. Pronunciation, grammar inmany aspects of language transfer can be ascribed to the vocabulary learning transfer.Therefore, the paper selected the research of Negative Transfer on English vocabularylearning. There were obvious traces of native language negative transfer in junior middleschool students’ vocabulary learning, which became a bottleneck improving their level ofEnglish learning. Based on the language transfer theory, contrast analysis theory, erroranalysis theory and previous research results, it analyzed the classification errors in theEnglish vocabulary learning, and aimed at reducing native speaker negative transfer to aminimum, finding more effective English vocabulary teaching strategies. Ultimately, it canimprove the junior high school students’ English vocabulary learning abilities accordingly.The thesis introduces the definition, types of transfer, and its essence, and further reviewsthe domestic and foreign research on the impact of native negative transfer in Englishvocabulary learning. Then it describes the theoretical basis of the study and the main theoriesare the contrast analysis and error analysis theory. The research contains the aims, the objects,research methods and research procedures, making use of scientific research methods tounderstand at this stage the status of junior high school English vocabulary, as well as thetypical errors of by applying to the survey and thematic test. Then according to the samplescollected which are classified and analyzed in four aspects which are specific word formerrors, part of speech errors, meaning errors, and the word collection errors. The typicalexamples of each type of error analysis are presented and analyzed to point out that the causesof error are that the differences between the two languages, English and Chinese. The main findings are concluded based on the data analysis. Some implications are concluded to helpavoid negative transfer in the process of English learning and teaching. One of the limitationsof the present study and suggestions for future study is pointed out that the junior middleschool students are in the initial stage of English learning. In addition, they are lacking inEnglish language learning environment, which is bound to be influenced by the mothertongue in the learning process of the English vocabulary. Therefore, teachers should treatthese errors correctly and effectively and make use of effective vocabulary teaching strategiesto help students overcome the impact of negative transfer. Finally, it can actively promote thepositive transfer of the mother tongue.
