ObjectivesThe investigation was to undermine the development history, current situation and native cognition of the route of national fitness in the western underdeveloped areas. The study aimed further to predict the limitations and existing problems on the development of national fitness in Gansu province based on a thorough analysis, and thus provide the first-hand data and feasible proposals for optimizing fitness environment and making the best of means to enhance civilian health, simultaneously filling the research gap of national fitness route in rural areas of Gansu provinceMethodsBefore adopting numbers of questionnaires, interviews, literature and statistics analysis,474towns and villages of14prefectures in Gansu Province were randomly selected firstly as the subjects of the study.650questionnaires were sent out and634of them were recovered,426of which are valid, with the rate of97.54percent and its efficiency of96.20percent. The database was built with EpiData3.0and analyzed with Spss17.0.ResultsOver the15years, great changes have taken place in the national fitness route of rural areas in Gansu province since1997, the year of implementing different projects for improving rural residents, health and living situation. Meanwhile, there are still some problems compared to the middle and eastern China. First, the variety of the outdoor fitness equipment is extremely inadequate, those places where more than10items have been fitted only take up10.49percent, national fitness route in1.07have been fitted for every ten thousand people in Gansu province, equipment installation mainly to the motion, power, interesting types, less configuration flexibility and balance equipment. Second, less than17.93percent of the fitness paths are installed on roadsides, and even in the wheat fields, while64.26percent paths cover an area of less than100square meters; Third, government investment accounted for59.67percent, as the main source of funds in Gansu province; Fourth, only10percent of the fitness paths are merely proportional to the quantity and frequency of use, and57.38percent of them are deteriorated; Fifth, the level of cognition on national fitness is varied from groups of people with different genders, regions and vocations.ConclusionsThe development of national fitness falls behind by comparison. Firstly, the number and variety of outdoor fitness equipments are fewer, and there are still some parts of the sites needing safety measures, mainly because of the single governmental investment into the fitness paths only through sports lotteries. Secondly, People in different areas take different interests in the knowledge of fitness paths, and the levels are ranged differently:women are more active than men; the young acknowledge most of the functions of the fitness path; the mental laborers need more health exercises than manual workers. Thirdly, the administrative rules and maintenance regulations of the fitness paths may not be implemented at home, so that they are severely damaged as a result of rare research into them and little maintenance along with lack of any public guidance.ProposalsBased on the findings, we put forward some suggestions. Firstly, we should optimize financial approaches to the facility construction, and encourage different investment mechanisms and multi-channel financial supports. Secondly, we should configure the facility correspondently according to both the functions and diversity of the fitness path facilities. Thirdly, we also need to optimize promotional channels and management strategies. Fourthly, we are supposed to improve the quality of facilities, enhance both the quantity and quality of rural sports instructors while mobilizing enthusiastic participation of the masses. Last but not least, the communication platforms urgently need to be optimized so as to develop the mass sports competition projects, and integrate the fitness route into the folk sports.
