Sport can reflect a country’s power and its influence can even surpass itself. Inaddition, sport is always closely connected to politics, and the two influence and restricteach other. With the development of human society, diplomacy is also developing. Inmodern society, sport diplomacy plays an important role out its large audience, highsocial impact and great flexibility. It shows that China’s comprehensive strength andinternational status are increasing. As a bridge between various countries, it also servesas an important channel for China to enlarge our political and economic impact in theworld. In summary, sport diplomacy is an important part of China’s foreign policy, andalso the most unique one.The history of Chinese sport is full of struggles and difficulties. When the People’sRepublic of China was just established, Chinese sport fell far behind the world’saverage level. Since1970s, the entire world has been focus on strengtheningcomprehensive power. Under such circumstances, both the society and sport of Chinawere facing an enlarging gap between developed countries. Knowing about the historyof China’s sport diplomacy has a realistic meaning for learning lessons from the pastand creating new situations in future. What’s more, to some extent, it can also contributea lot to China’s sport diplomacy in all domains.From1978to1994, China’s sport changed a lot. It returned to the Olympic familyand began its rapid development era. In1995, with the promulgation of Law of thePeople’s Republic of China on Physical Culture and Sports, China’s sport entered alegalized period. During this era, China had also changed a lot in the realm of politics.The opening-up policy broke the restrictions on the market and our mind. This changealso had a profound meaning in China’s sport policy. The restrictions were removed,some vague conceptions were cleared and China’s sport retuned to a correct way of socialistic development. At the time, the focus of sport activities had also changed.This article adopts the method of literature analysis, logical analysis, historicalanalysis and case analysis. Starting from the important events from1977to1994, thisarticle summarizes and analyzes the previous cases in the history of China’s sportdiplomacy; and then it talks about these events in three parts based on the timeline andbackground (from1977-1983, from1984-1988, and from1989to1994). In the first part,it talks about the relationship between China and international sports originations; in thesecond part, it talks about the development of China’s sport in various competitions; inthe third part, it talks about the relationship between China and other countries. At last,bases on these analysis it mainly studies the development of China’s sport diplomacy.The study on the development of China’s sport diplomacy from1977to1994canhelp understand its history, learn from the past and create new situations. Besides, it canalso contribute a lot to China’s overall diplomatic policies. In addition, based on thesocial, political and economical situations nowadays, this study can enrich materials anddata about China’s sport diplomacy and provide more information for scholars who areinterested in this aspect in future.
