In this paper, the document analysis method, the historical research method and the case study have been adopted to sort out and elaborate on the historical facts, in terms of the positive interaction between the University of Chicago and the city of Chicago during the school’s development in more than a century. Based on the variation of characteristics of this positive interaction, the whole development process can be divided into the following three period:The first period (1856-1907) is the formation and early development period of this interaction, mainly focusing on the positive interaction between the university and the whole region. The city of Chicago, the natural hinterland of the University of Chicago, served as a significant material base and provided massive emotional support when the university was prepared to be established, and created favorable conditions for further development of the university. Under the leadership of Stephen Harper, the first president of the University of Chicago, the university established its three major functions, teaching, research and social services, and it provided adult education for citizens in response to the region’s demand. During this period, the university and the city interact by meeting each other’s needs, and this represents a good start for their beneficial relationship. The second period (1907-1950) is the vigorous development period of this positive interaction, emphasizing the positive interaction between the university and the city when they tried to improve themselves. During this period, the driving force of interaction between the university and the city lay in that the plight of the regional development in the reality called for the engagement of the University, and it in turn internalized into the practical orientation of the science and research in the university. Based on its sociological studies, the University of Chicago began to research and address regional and social problems. The university became the main initiator of this positive interaction, and played a significant role in promoting the regional development; In contrast, Chicago had to be in a passive position in this relationship temporarily, and mainly relied on the aid from the university. The third period (1950-nowadays) is a comprehensive development period of this positive interaction, with new features in terms of the multi-faceted interactions between the university and the public undertakings such as health and education. The University of Chicago established a university service system, which aims to help the university develop its social value in professional education and personnel training through various channels such as cooperation projects, and special programs and projects. On the other hand, the increasing, widening and upgrading of public demand in this city provided potential and power for the university to achieve further accomplishment in its teaching and research. Thus, the positive interaction between the University of Chicago and the city of Chicago is comprehensively promoted and enhanced. The paper describes the uniqueness of this relationship as that there is an indissoluble bond between the city of Chicago and the University of Chicago, for the city "give birth to" and "bring up" the university. In the development course afterwards, the regional needs and the major concept of the University of Chicago continue to interact with and merge into each other. Based on the principle of "the blend of soul", the positive interaction has been maintained and developed, and various patterns and methods have been adopted in accordance with different backgrounds and needs of the times. The achievable and unique positive interacted pattern which both fit into the ever-changing characteristics and adheres to the longstanding spiritual core has been eventually established.
