After the Opium War,like the other abstracts in China, shandong experienced ahuge transformation.she walked away from the traditional society, and graduallypassing into the modern society. For a long time,the education of Shandong has beenthe continuation of traditional,which made it’s difficult to adapt to the developmentof modern society. Test the historical facts, we can found that as early as theChinese government began their education reform,there was a modern educationsystem existed.And the founder of the system was foreign missionaries.The nineteenth centenary was the “Protestant expansion century”,plenty ofChristian missions chose to went to overseas do missionary work.China,as a hugeheathen country,became many missionary’s target. After the Opium War,westernpowers signed a series of inequal treaties.these treaties made the public activity ofthe missionaries became possible.After the subscription of the tianjintreaty,dengzhou(later to yantai) became a trade port,after that,more and moremissionaries arrived shandong.when they arrived,they developed kinds of activitiesto help missionary work,and the education became a very important one.Christianeducation was flourishing all over shandong province.The Christian education experienced fifty years’ development in the later qingdynasty,and achieved remarkable results.Regardless of the original purpose of themissionaries, practice the concept of salvation in Christ or spread religion needs,theyindeed established a modern education system before the Chinese government.Noone canon deny it.Nevertheless,as foreigners,the system was drifting away the main part of theshandong education system. The Christian education system can only be aregional,religionary system,it can play an exemplary role,but can’t paly a leadingrole. Only the Chinese government can led the modernization of the Shandongeducation system. After the Boxer rebellion,the Qing government recall a painful experience,determined to reform, carry out a series of new policies. shandong was holding asafe lead in China in the reformation,politics, economy, society, culture and theother aspects accelerates towards modernization,. The modern education wasregarded a efficient way to save the nation, meanwhile as the times’ request,becamethe real new starting point of the education modernization.The Qing government ordered every province to establish all levels new-styleschools in September1901,starting the educational reformation.Shandongauthorities conform to the tide of historical development, devote major efforts todeveloping modern education,and eventually built a whole modern education systemin the last ten years of Qing dynasty.During the process of the education reformation in the last ten years in the lateQing dynasty, the Christian education system can not influence the government’seducation reformation, but the system built by missionaries and the students trainedby mission schools,play an important role in the process of the Chinese educationmodernization.
