Chinese swordsmanship and Japanese kendo are splendid cultural gems, which areformed in the long process of historical development. With popular support, both areworshipped and developed by the two countries’ people. Chinese swordsmanship andJapanese kendo are cultural phenomena rather than physical sports. Through thecomparative study of Chinese swordsmanship and Japanese kendo, it is found that bothhave faced the problem of transformation and Japanese kendo transformed comparativelymore successfully. Japanese kendo’s experience is worth learning in the development ofChinese swordsmanship.Chinese swordsmanship and Japanese kendo are organically inherent in the nationalcultures, politics, economy and the historical development of the countries, they beardistinctive imprint of their originality. Acting is comparatively more important in Chineseswordsmanship, which can be concluded from the various description of sword dance inthe history. In contrast, Japanese kendo pay more attention to actual combat, which isreflected in that kendo is usually acted by two persons.During the transition from traditional society to modern industrious society, bothChinese swordsmanship and Japanese kendo tried to take corresponding transformation.There are two things need doing: firstly, swordsmanship needs a qualitative leap on theway to the international stage; secondly, it should be actually adored rather than likedsuperficially. The improvement of Japanese kendo tradition developed from the art to thecreed, combining art and culture, resulting in something called Dao that can upgradehuman’s self-cultivation and enrich human’s inner life. Japanese kendo became arequired course in primary school and middle schools in1926which injected vigor into thedevelopment of Japanese kendo. Comparing to the Chinese swordsmanship, Japanesekendo is honorable and received much more attention. What is the fundamental reason?The study of Japanese kendo, learning its merit, can provide some theoretical basis andpractical references. Chinese swordsmanship and Japanese kendo are splendid cultural gems that aredeveloped in the long historical process, attracting lots of devotees continually studying.They are also widely practiced popular physical sports and cultural phenomena. Thereare distinctive differences between China and Japan as far as history, national spirit andvalues. The development of the two kinds of fencing has ever faced similar problem. Toovercome the bottleneck problem, we can learn from Japanese kendo’s developmentexperience and this will undoubtedly contribute to the transmission, inheritance anddevelopment of Chinese swordsmanship, and even that of Chinese martial art. Thedevelopment of our national martial art is the development of our traditional culture.Traditional culture is an important base for encouraging the sense of national dignity. Sothe study has significantly importance.Learning from the merit of Japanese kendo to promote the development of Chineseswordsmanship including the following: first, on the basis of being open and drawing inexperience, we should reform and build up things with native unique culture; second, giveprominence to the essence of martial art while combining with body-building and reasonsand interests. Third, the development aims at upgrading human’s self-cultivation andenriching human’s inner life. Fourth, Chinese swordsmanship should have cultural formsand etiquettes. Fifth, routine should be simplified with exercising tightly combined withactual combat. Sixth, Chinese swordsmanship should not only be accepted by not only byprimary and middle schools, but also needs the university students’ popular support.Seventh, Chinese swordsmanship should not be only a skill of acting, but be elevated to ascience full of vitality with a complete system.
