Studying abroad is a movement for exchanging cultures. It plays an important role in the development and construction of a nation, which is characteristic of all groups studying abroad. The foreign and domestic scholars carry more and more studies on the movement, but they don't make much comparison between students studying in Japan and students studying in U.S.. These two groups have many differences because of different state systems, different national conditions and other factors. I take these two groups as subject and make comparison between them. This thesis makes comparison between students studying in Japan and studentsstudying in U.S. in the early 20th century to show their importance in the modern history of China. I discuss their differences from their decision, lives abroad and influence at home, that is, from "outer" aspect and "inner"aspect. The "outer"aspect refers to the policy provided to students studying abroad by the Chinese government and the foreign countries. The "inner" aspect has something to do with the students themselves. Different students have different decision on studying abroad, which is caused by personal desire and objective reality. The background of the times, the social situation, state system and condition, policy orientation and other factors all have influence on students' life and study abroad. Different lives and studies abroad in return influence students'ideology and behavior. As a result, they take part in different activites abroad and have different influence at home when they come back.I mainly adopt the method of analyzing materials when making study and comparison. On the basis of collecting historical materials and reading historical reviews, I make comparison on students studying in Japan and U.S. in the early 20th century to show their importance in Chinese modern history. The movement never stops and becomes more and more popular. Therefore, making study and comparison on the movement of studying abroad may be helpful to today's movement fo studying abroad.
