| Since the1990s, classics readingμ has been springing up again after its evanishment in thelast few decades of Chinese history. In1994, Taiwan scholar Wang Caigui initiated theClassics Reading for Childrenμ campaign, which led to the extension of its influence tomainland China and the Chinese community worldwide. Many scholars studies classicsreadingμ intensively from the perspectives of education, culture, modern reflection andsociology and have gained lots of achievements. From the perspective of educationeconomics, this paper presents a study of the role and developmental prospect of classicsreadingμ, using the theory of educational function.This paper first analyzes the history and status quo of classics reading education, thenreviews the social function of classics reading education, analyzes its business value,discusses the relation between its educational function and business value, and finallyproposes developmental suggestions related the existing problems of classics readingeducation. This study aims to enhance classics reading education practitioners and parents·understanding of classics reading·s role in individual and social development and providetheoretical foundation and practice guidance for the development of classics readingeducation.Studies have showed, classics reading education·s individual development function hasgained much approval, including moral education function, intellectual education functionand aesthetic education function; as for social development function, its political function,economic function, and technology function·s approval degree is at an average level, exceptcultural function. In addition, in the market economy environment classics reading educationhas a great business value, which is the motive power of classics reading development. Andthis commercial value is a complement to its educational function.Though the classics reading market enjoys a rapid development at the present time, it hasnot matured yet. Some problems become obstacles for classics reading development, such asunbalanced quality of classics reading materials, inadequate teachers, limited teachingmethods, ineffective supervision of classics reading education organizations. Therefore, fromthe perspective of education function, the function of classics readingμ should be fully exploited, using positive functions and avoiding negative functions; from the marketperspective, stronger supervision and proper promotion should be employed to regulate theclassics reading education market. Both methods should be applied to ensure a sound andorderly progress of classics reading education in the market economy environment and fullyrealize traditional culture·s contemporary value. |
