With the development of national economy, people can find great satisfaction in all respects. At the same time, people are making a claim for better and comprehensive public safety. More and more people focus on the video surveillance system, which is import part in the security system. So, thesis focuses on video surveillance system and shows more details about research on server and client of the video surveillance system. What is more, a video surveillance system based on embedded development was designed and implemented in this thesis.Video surveillance system based on embedded development in the system adopted client/server model. The hardware of server selected mini2440board of Guang Zhou Friendly ARM Co.,Ltd and USB camera. The hardware of client is personal computer.Server is an embedded system, which is composed of ARM processor and Linux operation system. Firstly, configure and modify the U-boot and make sure the changed U-boot can lead Linux operation system and drive the serial port, DM9000chip, Nor Flash. Flash the U-Boot into Nor Flash. Secondly, compile the OV511chip camera driver and DM9000chip driver into Linux kernel during configure the Linux kernel. After that, flash the Linux kernel into Nor Flash. Thirdly, build network File System and Cramfs file system to support process. Fourth, compile program, which can finish video capture, encoded in H.264format, transmission and run on the server. The program captured video by calling the V4L interface of Linux operation system, then, encoded video by T264coder and transmitted video data in a real-time by RTP/UDP/IP protocols.Compile program by DirectShow and run on the client, the program met the requirement of receiving, decoding and displaying the video data.The whole system can run long-term and stability during the system verification and meet the requirement of video surveillance system.
