The tension control is a very important part of process control in the papermaking industry. A good tension control will improves the product quality and the productivity. The tension changes have a great impact on the paper production. An excessive tension will lead the distortion or fracture of the paper, while too small tension will make the stress distortion layer by layer and affect the processing quality. The frequent tension change will lead the linear velocity and the degree of tightness change, and it will also bring the low productivity for the qualified products. So the tension control is very important to the process of winding in the paper machine. It can not only effectively improve the production efficiency of paper, but also improve the quality of the paper, and reduce labor intensity.The tension control procedure of papermaking machine has the characteristics of the great dynamic change, the strong coupling between linear velocity and tension, and many sources of disturbance. The tension in any places will lead to a tension fluctuation in other places. Based on the Hooker’s law and the principle of torque balance, the tension control procedure model of the papermaking machine system is set up. The object model is a second order delay system and the traditional PID control can’t meet the requirements of tension control. Therefore the IMC(Internal Model Control) controller is designed. A simulation is made for winding segment. The simulation results show that IMC controller is better than the traditional PID control to achieve the stable control of the tension, at the same time, it can be able to overcome the impact of external interference.The hardware and software of the tension control in the paper machine winding control system are designed based on IMC controller, and a stable control of tension is achieved.
