With the development of intelligent appliances and network technologies, homenetwork has become the trend of social informatization. Home network achieves theinterconnection of various devices with a home gateway as the center and middlewaretechnology as the platform. Home gateway is becoming the focus of people’s attentionas the core device in the home network. Traditionally, home gateway only acts as abridge between home network and Internet, which can not meet the demonds ofincreasing traffic in the home network on quality of service (QoS). Therefore, it issignificant to research UPnP QoS architecture and admission control algorithm fordesigning the next generation of home gateway with excellent performance.Firstly, we summarize relevant techniques of home network, such as itsarchitecture, techniques of networking, middleware and QoS. Secondly, we have madea detailed study on UPnP QoS architecture proposed by UPnP forum for home gateway,and analyzed the compositions, work processes and several limitations of thearchitecture. Moreover, we design an expanded UPnP QoS architecture to solve thoselimitations, and we make a detailed description of the work processes of the expandedUPnP QoS architecture with a digital media player system as an example. On the basisof the expanded UPnP QoS architecture, we design a threshold-based admission controlalgorithm and an analysis model prototype. The performance of blocking probabilityand bandwidth utilization for the presented algorithm is studied with simulation andprogramming. Finally, we summarize the whole dissertation and provide some possibledirections for future work.
