People can obtain much more excellent and efficient communication experience benefited from increasingly maturity and development of related technology in mobile communication systems, which reach a high performance level in whatever audio, video or high rate data transmission. In recent years when3G systems continue to grow vigorously, the3GPP organization puts forward the4G project also called LTE-Long Term Evolution, and manages to put it into business use in some areas. With more and more requirements toward mobile communication experience from people, the affiliated communication technology continues getting more sophisticated, including channel modulation and demodulation, multiplexing, switching technology and user cut over. It requires some real-time communication quality evaluations at the same time of utilizing the state-of-the-art schemes, which enables systems themselves to allocate and dispatch resources adaptively and ensures users to enjoy reliable communication services. Meanwhile, the audio quality wins costumers’uppermost concern, and directly affects business income of mobile operators. The real-time audio quality evaluation, therefore, proves to be particularly important. The audio quality evaluation methods fairly got in common use are PESQ and E-Model. The former needs the support of original audio input signals, and can only be used in non real-time environments. Meanwhile the latter is one of the feasible means for real-time evaluation conditions because of convenient calculation and no need for original input supports. The traditional E-Model has not put packet loss and delay jitter and other problems from packet switching network into consideration, and is modified by researchers. However, if applied in LTE systems, the improved E-Model would still need to be developed on the basis of LTE features.First of all, this paper first briefly introduces the LTE communication system and VoIP technology accepted by LTE. Secondly, we give an overview of audio quality evaluation methods, especially PESQ and E-Model, and develop E-Model performances in packet loss and delay according to LTE traits. Finally, we simulate the LTE system and the improved audio quality evaluation scheme on the VC++6.0SDK platform. Experiment results show considerably high correlation with PESQ points and very low amount of calculation.
