Hong’an, located in Hubei province, is a renowned "general country" in China. The inscription "more than two hundred generals share the same hometown" by the great strategist Xu Xiangqian is undoubtedly the best summary of the old revolutionary area—Hong’an. Despite the numerous dazzling aureoles, the county has never succeeded in getting rid of the label which goes like "the national poverty-stricken county given priority in aid". The factors that impede the economic development of the area are as follows:the lack of adequate and scientific utilization of the high quality resources and the disproportion of the industrial structure.Beyond all doubt, the industrial restructuring plays a significant role in the economic growth of Hong’an, in addition, the option of the leading industry is of great necessity. Based on the investigation and research of the county’s current situation, the thesis will analyze in detail the problems that the old revolutionary area has encountered in its economic development, and consequently conclude the necessity of choosing the red tourism as the leading industry of the area and taking it as the means or approach of boosting the economy of the old revolutionary area. Besides, SWOT analysis will be used to investigate the promotion of red tourism. The paper will provide with relevant responses and suggestions to make up for the deficiencies, hoping to offer some illuminations upon the subject regarding how to promote the economic development through red tourism.
