In recent years, along with the deepening of China’s economic reform and therapid development of the domestic economy, many private enterprises have embarkedon one road of trans-regional operation, in order to seek new growth opportunities anddevelopment space in an off-site market. But, during the process of trans-regionaloperation, enterprises face a very important issue—“when the headquarters carry outthe trans-regional operation, during the decision-making process of the expatriatemanager, what factors should be considered in the end?”On the one hand, based on the theory of segmentation in Chinese market at thisstage, this paper learns from the overseas subsidiary human resourcemanagement-related theoretical perspectives and practice, combined with thesituational factors of the system distance, and later explores the selection and theinfluencing factors of expatriate manager in Chinese cross-regional private enterprises. On the other hand, based on the study of management mode of the horizontalintegration of Chinese enterprises in the new situation, taking the choice ofmanagement model as the mediating variables, trying to build a bridge between theexpatriate manager’s choice and its influencing factors, in order to explore theinfluencing factors of expatriate manager selection in Chinese cross-regional privateenterprises under the conditions of market segmentation. Specifically, by the casestudy of the private enterprises of China’s Guangdong region (KangmeiPharmaceutical Co., Ltd. as the specific case), taking the strategic choice of thecorporate, the institutional distance and the management of traditional as theindependent variables, the subsidiary age as an adjustment variable, this paperattempts to explore and analyze these factors how to impact the choice of expatriatemanagers in these Chinese cross-regional private enterprises.Through case studies, this paper finds that in the context of the Chinese marketsegmentation at this stage, during the selection process of the expatriate manager of Chinese cross-regional private enterprises, the strategic choice, institutional distanceand the management of traditional influence the selection directly, and the subsidiaryage adjust the relation between the strategic choice, institutional distance and theselection of expatriate managers, which may potentially affect the employmentdecisions of corporate executives through different ways. In addition, this paper findsthat the control mode and the different business models will also influence themanagers’ choice, mainly displaying one role of regulation to institutional distance. Finally, based on the result of the theoretical research and the reality of case studies, this paper builts one model about the selection and factors of expatriate managers inthe concluding section, trying to provide some theoretical guidance and help for theselection of expatriate managers of other cross-regional private enterprises.
