In the developmental background of Chinese yam industry, on the basis of wide collection of the domestic and foreign relevant data of yam production, scientific research, processing, trade and so on, combined with the On-the-spot investigation, the cases comparison method, and SWOT analysis method was used to analyze the current situation of the development of Guangxi yam industry. The economics theory, management theory, and agricultural product marketing theory were used to summarize the deficiency of Guangxi yam industry development, explore the trend and direction of the development of Guangxi yam industry, and put forward some suggestions and measures.After1990s, there was a great growth in the planting area, which is over250thousand hm2, and yield per unit area and the annual production, which is over5million t per year. China is the largest country of yam planting and consumption, which formed5major planting areas composed of Henan, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, Guangxi. Relying on the abundant outstanding varieties, the relatively low labor costs, the promotion of all kinds of advanced planting technology and the growth of China agricultural product export, the export of Chinese yam continued to increase. However, the current situation of Chinese yam industry is still in the primary stage because of the lack of reasonable industry plan in main planting areas. In the upstream of Chinese yam industrial chain, there are many problems, such as planting in small scale, low degree of farmers organization, and the lack of uniform quality standard. The developmental foundation of industrial chain downstream is weak, which has such problems as the disconnection between research and production, low product technology content, serious homogeneity problems.After1950s, the development of yam in Guangxi could be divided into start stage, wandering period and two rapid developmental periods. There are38000hm2plantation areas, more than1million ton average total yield. The yam is planted mainly in Yangsuo, Pingle. Guiping, Bobai and Yongning Country of Guangxi. Compared to the other major producing areas, there are such obvious advantages as big cultivated area, low cost price, superior climate and location advantages in Guangxi, which is one of five main producing areas and the largest yam production area in the south of China. In the meanwhile, Guangxi yam industry development there are such problems as varieties degradation, new varieties breeding lag, low cultivation and management level, low degree of mechanization, low farmers’ organizational level, the scattered management, small scale processing enterprise, lack of leading enterprises and local brands.A new developmental strategy of "12345" of Guangxi yam is put forward. The first is to keep planting area stable. The second is to make the optimization of the regional distribution of yam planting and the scale and structure of processing enterprise. The third means that yam should be planted in four main areas includuing Guilin, Guigang, Nanning and Yulin city, the culitivation techniques should be focus on the use of the making hole cultivation and the directional tuber formation cultivation, and green pollution-free yam planting should be developed. The fourth is to increase farmers’ organizational level, to expand the circulation channel, to develop small processing enterprises, and to culture leading enterprises. The firth is to take specialization, brand, standard, scale and Intensive as the developmental direction of yam in Guangxi.Suggestions and measures to promote the development of Guangxi yam industry. Firstly, it is to strengthen scientific research, import the varieties from other major areas, improve the breeding and promotion of new varieties. Secondly, the research and extension of new plant management technology, promoting standardization planting, reducing production cost, improving the degree of mechanization, enhancing the quality and market competitiveness of products should be done. Thirdly, it is to help farmer to form or join economic cooperation organization, to culture new market main body and realize the specialization of production. Fourthly, planting intensive, standardization and green pollution-free production base should be promoted. Firthly, it is to expand the downstream of yam industry by attracting nonlocal enterprises, expanding local enterprises, cultivating leading enterprises. Sixthly, relying on the circulation system of transporting the vegetables from south to north of China in Guangxi, the measures of building stereo yam sales network and strengthening local brands should be taken.
