Based on a unique perspective—the industry chain, this paper selects the paneldata sample of “year&industry”as the observation unit. Firstly, it estimates theMalmquist index of each industrial sectors and divides them into three groups ofupper, middle and lower along the industry chain. Then it analyzes the differentcharacteristics of total factor productivity growth (TFP growth) along the industrychain. Secondly, an empirical method is used to analyze the influence of innovation, imitation, human capital and other factors on TFP growth. Furthermore, the samplewas divided into two sub-samples, then we analyses the different effects ofinfluencing factors on TFP growth in different sectors along the industry chain bythe same regression method. This paper focuses on three groups of variables, which are independentinnovation, imitation and human capital. We use the proportion of science andtechnology personnel in all the average number of practitioners of each industrialsector to proxy the level of human capital, it will make up the neglect of mobility ofexisting literature. In addition, because the industry technology progress dependson basic research and technical progress itself has accumulation characteristics,TFP growth may be dependent on the growth rate of the lagged period, therefore, during the estimation stage, we use appropriate instruments to account for thepotential endogenous of the model, extends it as a dynamic model and usesSYS-GMM regression method to obtain consistent estimates of the explanatoryvariable coefficient. Finally, based on the above theoretical and empirical analysis, this paperdraws the following conclusion: the influencing factors of different industrialsectors have different effects on TFP growth along the industrial chain. Specifically, human capital has a significantly positive impact on TFP growth, but for China’slarge and medium-sized industrial enterprises (mainly state-owned enterprises),the effects of independent innovation and imitation on the TFP growth are negative, and the effects of innovation of the industries on upper and middle reaches are moreserious.
