After the reform and opening up, especially since joined the WorldTrade Organization, The retail industry of China entered a period of rapidgrowth. The industrial scale expanded rapidly, and the presence of foreignretail enterprises has intensified the retail industry competition. Alongwith the implementation of the strategy of the western development andwhich continued furtherance, the retail industry of Gansu province hasbeen continuous developed and opening up: local retail enterprises haverisen rapidly and moved toward the mode of chain management; otherretailers, including foreign ones also have started to invest in andoccupied a place in the retail market. In the process of development,market structure, market conduct and market performance of retailindustry in Gansu province have got a lot of changes.This paper attempts to analysis the market structure, market conductand market performance of retail industry in Gansu province by theperspective of SCP paradigm of industrial organization theory, andempirically studies the performance of the retail industry from the marketstructure and market conduct, then it will put forward the relevantrecommendations to optimize the industrial organization, hoping tobenefit to the further development of industrial organization theory andpractical application, and provide the related policies and suggestion forthe government and retail enterprises. In views of this, this paper has completed the following five aspectresearch work specifically. First, it arranges some related papers. Second,it studies the market structure of the retail industry of Gansu provincefrom the aspects of market concentration, product differentiation,economies of scale, entry and exit barriers. Third, it studies the marketconduct of the retail industry of Gansu province from the aspects ofpricing, investment and expansion, mergers and acquisitions. Fourth, itstudies the market performance of the retail industry of Gansu provincefrom the aspects of the performance of resource allocation and scale, andfinds ways to improve market performance by questing influencingfactors. Finally, according to the empirical study, it proposes the policyand the suggestion on the development of the retail industry of Gansuprovince.
