BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a revolutionary computer-appliedtechnology in the construction industry, following the CAD (Computer Aided Design)technology. In developed countries, such as the United States and European countries,BIM is making a rapid progress with the development of Information Technology andDigital Technology in the early21stCentury. It has been regarded as an appropriatesolution to improve problems of resource wasting and low construction productivity.BIM is urgently needed by China’s construction industry to meet its opportunitiesand challenges. However, compared with developed countries, the progress of BIMdevelopment in China is very low. It is urgently needed to discover the barriers of BIMadoption and identify key barriers which strongly impact the BIM adoption so as topropose corresponding measures to remove the key barriers. This thesis outlined41“barriers of the adoption of BIM in China” by literatureresearch. A survey about the41barriers’ impaction was carried out among Chineseconstruction practitioners. Data assessing the relative importance between41barrierswere collected. By using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process),15“key barriers” wereidentified from41barriers. Comparing the key BIM adoption barriers in China and inSouth Korea, five “characteristics of BIM adoption barriers in China” were concluded. In the last part of the thesis, measures to remove the15“key barriers” wereproposed. Furthermore, a roadmap of BIM adoption and application in china wasdevelopedbased upon the measures andcharacteristics of barriers ofthe BIM adoption inChina. The roadmap includes three phases of development, the phase of pre-adoption,the phase of adoption and the phase of application. During the development, thegoverment sector, business sector and individual sector are required to make a jointeffort to deal with key barriers and achieve the goal of BIM development.Responsibilities and liabilities of the government sector, business sector and individualsector in each phase of development were specified in the roadmap. This thesis presents the first research systematically analysis the the barriers ofBIM development in China. It not only identifies key barriers, but also providesvaluable measures to remove barriers and a roadmap of BIM adoption and development in China.
