Reasonable urban rail transit can not only make urban rail transit an effective way torelieve traffic jam in the city, but also can achieve both the public benefit and economicbenefit. There is a elastic relation between fare level and passenger traffic, so that thealteration of ticket price will cause the variation of passenger traffic. Therefore, starting withthe the relation between urban rail transit ticket price and passenger traffic as well as usingeconomic and statistic theory and method to make analysis to seek for an approach of makingticket price that can achieve both public benefit and economic benefit, has an importantinstructive significance for the long-term development of urban rail transit ticket price. This article starts with the studying of domestic and overseas current condition of settingrail transit ticket price. We analysed the general theory as well as advantages anddisadvantages of price setting model domestically and overseas. Then,we made a overview ofthe elastic theory and made a theoretical analysis on the elastic relation between urban railtransit ticket price and the passenger traffic. Next, according to Beijing urban rail transitstatistics, we analysed the relation between ticket price and passenger trafficquantitatively, through which we draw the conclusion that it lacks of elastic relation betweenurban rail transit ticket price and passenger traffic. Because of the lack of elastic relationbetween ticket price and passenger traffic, at the same time taking possible effect factors ofurban rail transit into account, we draw the conclusion that the effictive way is that to setticket price by stages in accordance with the city economic development, which willachieve both public benefit and economic benefit utmostly. After that, we made an empiricalanalysis on Xi’an subway according to the development plan of Xi’an subway and the relevanteffect factor of ticket price, we divided the Xi’an subway operating into four stages and cameup with some suggestions for each stage of Xi’an subway ticket price setting. The last part of this article is the conclusion, also include the disadvantages and theproblem which should be discussed further.
