Titanium has been widely used in aviation, aerospace, automotive, chemical andother fields due to its excellent physical and mechanical properties such as highspecific strength, high corrosion resistance and heat resistance. However, due totitanium alloys’ low thermal conductivity and elasticity modulus, in addition, goodchemical activity, the poor performance of the ability of its process, it is regarded as atypical difficult materials. Nowadays, uncoated carbide cutting tool has been usedmainly in machining titanium alloys, however, because of tool wear in machining, themachined surface quality is difficult to guarantee, greatly limits the titanium processingefficiency.Cutting tests of titanium alloy Ti-6A1-4V are carried out using polycrystallinediamond (PCD) tools to investigate the effect of cutting paremeters on cuttingtemperature, tool wear and machined surface quality. Research results provide atheoretical basis to improve the surface quality and reduce tool wear. The main researchwork are as follows:According to titanium cutting temperature experiments, the effect of cuttingparameters on cutting temperature was studied.By scanning electron microscopy and energy spectrum analysis, titanium cuttingtool wear morphology and wear mechanisms were studied and it was found that thePCD cutting tool wear were mainly in the form of flank wear. The tool wear mechanismof wear and adhesive wear of the hard particles. Through the PCD cutting tool wearexperimental researches, we analyzed influence law of tool geometrical parameter andcutting dosages on the tool wear, and compared the tool wear influence of ultrasonicvibration cutting on ordinary cutting of titanium alloy. The titanium surface morphology after cutting was analyzed, and the influence ofultrasonic vibration and ordinary cutting on machined surface quality wasstudied.Through the experimental research on the surface roughness, the influence lawof tool geometrical parameter and cutting parameters on the surface roughness wasinvestigated. An empirical formula of the change of surface roughness with the cuttingparameters was established based on orthogonal experimental data.
