As the main process of the domestic waste disposal, the sanitary landfill will produce landfill leachate harmful to the environment. The water-quality constituent of landfill leachate is complex with high concentrations of COD, heavy metal ions and ammonia-nitrogen which fluctuates largely. If the landfill leachate discharges into the environment, it would lead to serious pollution to soil and groundwater. At present, ordinary treatment processes of the landfill leachate adopted by most countries in the world are composed of three types:biological treatment as the main process, physical-chemical treatment as the pretreatment process, and land method as the post-processing process.Based on the study on the sanitary landfill in Suzhou, the author conducted an analysis on landfill leachate treatment process (physical-chemical treatment-biochemical treatment (A/O/O)-Ultrafiltration), and optimized the original progress design in order to establish a set of economic, rational and practical process of landfill leachate treatment.The main results were shown as follows:(1) The process is technically feasible. In application, its economy, practicality and rationality should be considered. It should follow the suggestion on process of saving energy.(2) The water flow was calculated using the method of HELP (Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance), and the design water flow was employed as950m3/d. The water qualities for the designed process were20000mg/L (CODcr),10000mg/L (BOD5),2500mg/L (NH3-N),40mg/L (TP),2000mg/L (SS), and3000mg/L (TN), in view of the water qualities from routine monitoring data over years. The specified process parameters for effective volume and HRT at each stage can be obtained according to the status of water quality and water flow.(3) Through an analysis of the theoretical caculation and the project running, it proved that the water qualities of landfill leachate treated with the designed process meet the national standard of GB16889(CODcr=10000mg/L, BOD5=600mg/L, SS=400mg/L).(4) A benefit analysis displayed that the running cost for this landfill leachate treatment is6.4yuan per ton everyday. Therefore, we conclude that the process (physical-chemical treatment-biochemical treatment (A/O/O)-Ultrafiltration) is feasible for the treatment of landfill leachate.
