Study On Migration And Barrier Properties Of Packing Material Of Cosmetics

The quality of the cosmetic have been concerned, but the national supervisiondepartment just focuses on the content of the toxic substance in the raw material of thecosmetic for a long time, and neglects the toxic effect from the packaging materials ofthe cosmetic. The cosmetic is a substance which is directly absorbed by the skin and is notpassed through the hepar for detoxification, its quality should be regulated. It needs theappropriate and safe packaging materials to ensure the safety of cosmetic. The relatedliterature shows that the additives in the plastic packaging materials for food and medicinewould be migrated, particularly, be migrated to the oily contents. Now there is a fewreports about the the study of the migration of the cosmetic which content is mostly oilysubstance. It is aslo lack of regulations and standards for the packaging materials. On theother hand, the production less consider the adaptability and security issues of cosmeticpackaging for the aesthetic and reducing costs reasons. In this thesis we study the barrierproperties and material migration of several packaging materials of the cosmetic forcommonly used.It will provide a theoretical basis for the applicability and guiding basisfor the cosmetics companies to choose the right packaging materials and provide thescientific data to plan the effective period,but also for national regulatory authorities toregulate the management of cosmetics.In this paper, we study barrier properties and material migration performance ofthree packaging materials of the cosmetic for commonly used which are PE, PP, PETplastic bottles.1. The soaking solution is studied by UV-visible spectroscopy, pH value,oxidation-reduction reaction, nonvolatile matter and heavy metal, the results showed thatthe volume of material migration in the water extracts is smaller than the alcohols extracts,and PET has large volume of material migration in the ethanol extracts, it is not suitablefor directly holding alcohols matrix cosmetics, PP is not particularly suitable for holdinggrease matrix cosmetics.2. The assay and migration of Antioxidant1010, Antioxidant168, Antioxidant330andAntioxidant1076used in PE, PP are studied by RP-HPLC method, the results showed thatpercentage of Antioxidant1010in PE is0.018and in PP is0.019,there is noAntioxidant168, Antioxidant330and Antioxidant1076in these two materails. Theresults also showed that there is no Antioxidant1010migration. The residualdetermination of acetaldehyde in PET is studied by Gas Chromatography, the results showed that the volume of residual determination of acetaldehyde in PET is matched withthe packaging of food and pharmaceutical standard.3. Water vapour permeability, ethanol permeability and oily permeability are studiedby the gravimetric method for PE, PP, PET plastic bottles and the results showed that PEand PET has good barrier properties of water and ethanol, PP has poor barrier propertiesof ethanol.PET has the best barrier properties of ethanol in these three materails and PPhas best barrier properties of water.All in all, PE is suitable for deirectly holding water matrix cosmetics, alcohols matrixcosmetics and grease matrix cosmetics, the material migrate a little substance to themimetic cosmetic, and has less impact to the cosmetic.PP is suitable for directly holdingwater matrix cosmetics, and if holding alcohols matrix cosmetics, the activ ingredient ofcometic will evaporate faster and the period of validity will be shortened, if holdinggrease matrix cosmetics, it will migrate much substance to affect the composition ofcometic.PET is suitable for directly holding water matrix cosmetics and grease matrixcosmetics, if holding alcohols matrix cosmetics, it will migrate much substance to affectthe composition of cometic.But now, most of cosmetics containing alcohol solvent usedPET bottles to hold, and most of cosmetics containing grease used PP bottles to hold.Thereality is that a lot of packaging material which has security risks is used to hold cosmetics,It need to have the relevant laws and regulations to regulate.
