With the increasing demand for the natural resources, more and more waste is discharged into the natural environment. The natural water body is polluted more and more serious by industry and domestic wastewater. Then, the discharge requirement of the industrial and domestic wastewater is improved, also, presented a challenge to potable water purification. As an efficient and rapid water purification method, flotation plays an important role in sewage treatment, water recycling and potable water purification. Micro-bubble generator, as the key technology, becomes the focus of this study. The foreign and domestic history of research and development of water purification by flotation was elaborated in this paper. Several common flotation methods and their working principles, advantages and disadvantages were described. Several new micro-bubble generation methods were introduced and a new micro-bubble generator, self-sucking shear-flow micropore micro-bubble generator was given. The principle of negative pressure formed in Venturi pipe, influencing factor of micro-bubble generated from micropores, and influence of the shear-flow on micro-bubble diameter were studied respectively. Then the water inlet and outlet semi-cone angles, pipe length and pipe inner diameter were simulated through FLUENT by changing the parameters respectively. Gas rate of the outlet, curves of pressure and turbulent kinetic energy on the model axis were changed when the parameters changed. Based on the results, the optimized values were obtained, and this micro-bubble generator suited in the laboratory was designed. And through clear water experiments, the operating parameters of this micro-bubble generator were determined, and did some basic works of the industrial application of this micro-bubble generator. This research is supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China. The study of this micro-bubble generator is beneficial for the practical application.
