The characteristic of joints of guide way has great influence on the dynamic property of machine tool, so it has significant importance to the study of it. The research of the characteristic mainly starts with the contact problem between rough surfaces at present. How to identify and characterize the micro-topography precisely is the first target of contact problem. The result of micro-topography does not possess objectivity and uniqueness, which is based on the traditional quantitative description method. Much limitation is existed in practical use through this method. Yet. all information of roughness under multi-scale can be reflected based on the fractal theory, showing the superiority compared with the traditional quantitative description method. The reconstruction of micro-topography and its algorithm are studied combining with fractal theory and statistical methods in this paper. Measurement on the specimen near to the material of machine guide way and process conditions first to be taken by using Atomic Force Microscope(AFM), and the fractal features of micro-topography of rough have been analyzed through the data obtained from measurement. Analysis shows that there are fractal features on the rough surface of specimen in the condition of meeting operating mode. And the fractal characteristic parameters and other3D evaluation parameters are calculated by MATALB program. Then, the micro-topography of the specimen simulated by formula combined with fractal theory and statistical principle is compared with measured surface, seeking a fractal model which could characterize the micro-topography well. Finally the fractal rough surface is created using the method of secondary development by means of UG.Research has indicates that the fractal rough surface can effectively characterize the micro-topography of engineering surfaces, simulate the rough surfaces without being limited by multiple scale characteristics and lay the foundation for the subsequent analysis of dynamic characteristics.
