This paper was a part of the technological and chief projects sponsored by ChinaNational Tobacco Company (CNTC). In this paper, the filtration efficiencies anddistribution patterns of several harmful components, namely nicotine, hydrogencyanide and ammonia, in five kinds of filters with different structures wereinvestigated. The nicotine cutting loss rate models, including transverse cutting andhomocentric-lengthways cutting, of filters were established. The results showed thatfiltration efficiencies of the harmful components in mainstream smoke, of filters withdifference structures were significant difference. It should be helpful in cigarette filterdesign and improvement, as well as producing low-harm cigarette with reducedrelease of tar and harmful compounds in mainstream smoke.(1) The nicotine cutting loss of filters was investigatived, and the results showedthat the relationships between nicotine cutting loss rate and the cutting area oftransverse cutting and homocentric-lengthways cutting conformed to the followingequations:(1) Y=0.033X×100%(X:mm~2),(2) Y=0.0417X×100%(X:mm~2),respectively.(2) Nicotine filtration efficiencies and retention nicotine longitudinal/spacedistribution patterns in five kinds of filters with different structures were investigated. The results showed that Nicotine filtration efficiencies of regular acetate filter, outergrooved acetate filter, inner grooved acetate filter, paper/acetate dual filter andventilation cavity acetate filter, were39.06%,45.45%,39.63%,33.74%and31.75%,respectively. The longitudinal/space distribution patterns of retention nicotine infilters were obtained, treated with polynomial fitting and interpolation analysis.(3) Hydrogen cyanide filtration efficiencies and retention hydrogen cyanidelongitudinal/space distribution patterns in five kinds of filters with different structureswere investigated. The results showed that Hydrogen cyanide filtration efficiencies ofregular acetate filter, outer grooved acetate filter, inner grooved acetate filter,paper/acetate dual filter and ventilation cavity acetate filter, were23.94%,25.06%,25.41%,16.03%and15.75%, respectively. The longitudinal/space distributionpatterns of retention hydrogen cyanide in filters were were obtained, treated withpolynomial fitting and interpolation analysis.(4) Ammonia filtration efficiencies and retention ammonia longitudinal/spacedistribution patterns in five kinds of filters with different structures were investigated. The results showed that Ammonia filtration efficiencies of regular acetate filter, outergrooved acetate filter, inner grooved acetate filter, paper/acetate dual filter andventilation cavity acetate filter, were61.15%,63.90%,69.82%,70.21%and49.40%,respectively. The longitudinal/space distribution patterns of retention ammonia infilters were obtained, treated with polynomial fitting and interpolation analysis.
