An important challenge in the preparation of self-assembling materials is to control the supramolecular structures with well-defined shapes and sizes which have potential for fundamental and practical implications in areas such as materials science, molecular electronics and biomimetric chemistry. In this paper, we have successfully designed and synthesized series of Coil-Rod-Coil molecules. The structures of Z-shaped moleculars and ionic liquid crystals were characterized by1H-NMR and MALDI-TOF-MASS spectroscopy. The self-assembling behavior of the molecules in bulk state were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, POM and X-ray diffraction. X-ray indicated that ionic liquid crystals1had no liquid crystalline phase, and2self-assembles into2D rectangular columnar structure in the crystalline phase. Z-shaped moleculars1-3and5-6self-assembled into lamellar structure at room temperature. The moleculars all had liquid crystalline phases except molecular4.1t’s worth noting that molecule4did not show any liquid crystalline phase though the coil volume fraction of PEO is the same molecular1. It was the influence of steric hindrance at the rod/coil interface that makes the differences between molecule1and4.We used UV-Vis, FL,TEM and SEM to investigate the self-assembling behavior of the molecules in aqueous solution. UV-Vis and Fluorescence emission spectra of Z-shaped molecules1-3in water and in CH2Cl2shows the molecule self assemble into spherical aggregation.
