| Rod-coil molecules is an important part of molecular self-assembly,the synthesis and studies on self-assembly properties have a significant contribution to materials, biology, madicine, supramolecule fields.Rod is consisted of biphenyl compounds connected by ether linkage, ester linkage, double bonds or connect directly.Coil is consisted of alkyl chain or oxyalkyl chain. Rod-coil molecules can self-assemble into various kinds of supermolecular structures by microphase separation interaction, π-π stacking interaction, H-bond interaction and so on.We synthesized two types of rod-coil molecules as well as a rod-coil molecular precursor. The molecular structures are characterized by means of1H-NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy. The liquid crystalline properties of the molecules were preliminary studied by polarizing microscope (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).One is rod-coil molecules10a-12a consisting of conjugated double bond connecting benzene rings as rod segment and different chrial poly(ethylene oxide) chains as coil segment. We studied molecules which has similar poly(ethylene oxide) chains without chirality compared in previous work. The other is rod-coil molecules4b-6b,4c-6c consisting of chiral or achiral poly(ethylene oxide) chains as well as H shaped rod-coil molecule precursors. We found parts of them have liquid crystalline properties studied by polarizing microscope (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).Also we found parts of them have red shift phenomenon by ultraviolet spectrophotometer (UV),spherical structures by Atomic Force Microscope(AFM), but the definite liquid crystalline properties and the self-assembling behavior in solutions of these molecules still need further studies. |
