With the development and improvement of advanced technology, glass materialsare widely used in many high technology fields, such as communication,photo-election, aerospace, instrument and so on. Glass materials have thecharacteristics of high hardness and high brittleness, therefore the grinding of whichhas become a conventional machining method. Due to the low efficiency and highcost of grinding and polishing glass materials and the impossibility of machining thecomplex surface workpieces, so the cutting becomes a new method of machiningglass materials. Combined with previous researchering results and ultra-precisioncutting process technology, this thesis simulates the machining process of glass byusing the discrete element method (DEM). The thesis makes the following aspects ofcontent.1)Through creating the DEM of soda lime glass by PFC2D program and usingseveral simulation tests to calibrate the model, the thesis got the two-dimensionalmodel of DEM matched with the mechanical property of soda lime glass, and verifiedthe feasibility of DEM to simulate soda lime glass.2)Based on calibrated model, it has constructed the two-dimensional cuttingmodel of soda lime glass, and simulated its cutting process. The effects of cracksnumber and cutting force under different cutting deptha p, cutting angle0and cuttingspeed were explored in detail by adopting a single factor method, and theparameters of optimizing ultra-precision cutting are, cutting depth=1-2μm, rake angle=-10°, cutting speed=100mm/min.3)Finally, a scratch experiment of soda lime glass was done to get the changes ofindenter tangential force under constant normal load and to investigate the surface andsubsurface cracks. Approximately in accordance with simulations, the result furtherverified the feasibility and effectiveness of soda lime glass DEM. The thesis providesa reference for the development and application of the cutting of glass.
