Surfactants are amphiphilic molecules which both have hydrophilic groups andhydrophobic groups. They are widespread in several human activities because of a series ofexcellent performances like wetting and emulsifying. A large number of surfactant containingwastewater was discharged into the environment resulting in harming aquatic life, pollutingthe water and endangering human health. Therefore, it is important to monitor and controlemissions of surfactants in environmental water. This paper outlined the nature、hazards and the development trend an detection methodsof the surfactants. It also introduced the basic principle and characteristics of ionchromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technology. It mainlyresearched on the analysis of sodium alkyl sulfates anion surfactant and fatty alcoholpolyoxyethylene ether non-ionic surfactants.1A simple and fast analytical method using ion-pair chromatography with suppressedconductivity detection was developed to simultaneously detect and quantify sodiumdecylsulfate (C10), sodium undecylsulfate (C11), sodium dodecylsulfate (C12), sodiumtridecylsulfate (C13), sodium tetradecylsulfate (C14), sodium cetylsulfate (C16) and sodiumoctadecylsulfate (C18) in environmental water. The effect of the mobile phase parameters(NH4OH, CH3CN and Na2CO3concentration) on the retention factors has been studied indetails. Each anion species of the analytes could be separated from the others. The linearranges varied from10mg/L to200mg/L and the detection limits were all10mg/L(Injectvolume20μL,S/N=3) and the relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) was0.621%-4.242%. Thesamples’ recoveries were92.8%-100.5%. With its simplicity, sensitivity, accuracy andprecision, the proposed methodology is optimal for determination of seven sodium alkylsulfates in environmental water.2The method of liquid chromatography coupled to massspectrometry was established to analyse C12AEOs, C16AEOsand C18AEOs.The analysis ofmass spectrometry after chromatography separation was obtained. This paper studied thelevel of ionization rule and the rule of craking secondary mass spectrometry. A simple andrapid method was established to separate and identify AEOs. It has importance on massspectrometric identification and analysis of such polymers.
