Conceptual design is the decision-making and integrative expression of injectionmold structure, which has a decisive influence on production costs, production cycle andproducts molding equality. However, the existing general CAD softwares do not provideappropriate support on conceptual design of injection mold. Most of them arecompleted,relying on experience and calculation of chief designer, leading to lowerproduction efficiency, repeated design and higher professional requirements on designer,which goes against the accumulation and growth of design knowledge. Therefore, it is ofgreat significance to develop professional injection mold conceptual design system,making good use of design knowledge in successful cases, realizing CACD of injectionmold and seamless integration of conceptual design and detailed design.In this paper, knowledge based engineering is used in conceptual design of injectionmold, putting forward the development of conceptual design system of injection moldbased on KBE. According to the structure and design characteristics, the design elementsin all parts are analyzed, the design knowledge of plastic products,molding core,moldbase,cooling system,ejector system is expressed using object-oriented method,andfinally the cases base is establishment. The geometrical information and attributeinformation is obtained by spreading the assembly tree in fully automatic way, as well asestablishing man-machine interface to obtain information that can not be queried,based on NXNX platform. Then, the “Top_Down” assembly mode is used to establish standardassembly structure in knowledge reuse to initialize design environment, improving thestandardization and integration of the system. Then, the mold is designed modularly.Finally, the system interface was developed, based on UG OPEN/API, in order to realizethe management of the knowledge base.Based on above studies, the conceptual design system of injection mold based onKBE has been developed on NX platform. With this system, design knowledge can bereused and rapid CACD of injection mold can be achieved easily. What’ more, the designefficiency has been greatly improved and, design experience and knowledge accumulation is achieved, and the market competitiveness of mold enterprise is effectively improved.
