The pumping unit is the most commonly used ground lifting equipment in oil productionindustry. In recent decades, the world’s demand for crude oil is growing, which poses somehigher requirements to oilfield exploration and pushes pumping units toward alow-energy-consumption, automated, intelligent and multi-functional orientation. The longstroke non-beam pumping unit, featured by high efficiency, low cost, high economical benefit,and long service life, marks the main direction for the development of future pumping units.Therefore, this paper, based on the experimental model of the long stroke non-beam pumpingunit, designs a variable frequency speed control system.Rockwell automatics have been widely applied in manufacturing and industrialautomated production. And the manufacturing equipments are manually controlled in anearlier time, while the equipments are gradually controlled by automation devices now. Thispaper designs a variable frequency speed control system for the pumping unit, using a longstroke non-beam pumping unit as its experimental platform, a CompactLogixL35E PLC as itscontroller, a PowerFlex40transducer as its implement unit, a rotary encoder and a high-speedcounter module as its sensor unit, and transforming an open-loop control system into aclosed-loop system. The RSLogix5000programming software is applied in the experiment towrite ladder diagram programs, thus realizing the operation control of the whole equipmentset. This paper, combining the use of software and hardware facilities, has proposed arelatively comprehensive and detailed designing idea and plan.Apply the intelligent control algorithm into practical industrial control system. Thisproblem is quite difficult to settle in the field of industrial automatic control. In this paper, theOPC communication technology is used, which contributes to the successful implementationof real-time data interaction between MATLAB and PLC. In this system, the fuzzy PIDcontrol algorithm is used, allowing an accuracy control of the pumping unit’s motor speed.And based on the dynamic performance comparison between the traditional PID controlalgorithm and the fuzzy PID control algorithm, the experimental results show that the fuzzy PID control algorithm can contribute to a better control effect.This design plan successfully achieves the function of variable frequency speed controlin the experimental model of the long stroke non-beam pumping unit. This system, featuredby energy efficiency and low consumption, reliable operation, and high practical value, can bewidely applied in the actual pumping units. What’s more, this system can provide as a set ofeffective solutions to realize intelligent control algorithm in the field of industrial automation.
