With the molds increasingly prominent position in the manufacturing, the demand of service life and performance is increasing. From the development trend, the surface hardening technology of molds is gradually popular and applied. But the finishing difficulty will be intensified along with the development of surface hardness and wear resistance performance.A finishing technology of softness consolidation abrasives pneumatic wheel is proposed to solve the automatic finishing technical problem of surface hardening molds. But the research on localized hardening molds is still weak now. Based on the pneumatic wheel finishing technology of localized hardening molds, this paper simulates and experiments results. The main contents and results are as follows:(1) Considering the characteristics of the softness consolidation abrasives pneumatic wheel finishing tool and localized hardening molds, the material removal of single abrasive and cutting mechanics of pneumatic wheel are researched. It is established the material removal model of softness consolidation abrasives pneumatic wheel for different hardness molds and the relationship between contact force of different hardness molds and indentation depth of material. Thus, it provides the basis for pneumatic wheel finishing technique on localized hardening molds.(2) The material indentation depth of single abrasive for different hardness molds and in different pressures, the contact problem between pneumatic wheel and different curvatures molds are simulated to verify the correctness and accuracy of the theoretical model.(3) In the robot-assisted mold automated finishing system, it is compared the material removal and finishing effects between different abrasive sizes on different hardening molds. Thus, it provides the basis of abrasive screening for efficient and automated finishing on different hardening molds. (4) Through the experiment of different finishing methods, it shows that the method of changing pressures to control the mold surface contact force during the whole finishing can uniform material removal. And the mold surface quality has been effectively improved.The research results have laid a theoretical foundation for application of the surface hardening technology on curve molds. And it has provided an engineering guidance for softness consolidation abrasives pneumatic wheel on localized hardening molds.
