As the main field of Virtual Reality, Virtual Assembly is one of the important parts of the Virtual Design and Virtual Manufacturing. With the Virtual Assembly technology it can save cost, improve efficiency and quality during the industrial products manufacturing. The main fields of Virtual Assembly technology research include Assembly model, Assembly process planning, Assembly Collision Detection, and Assembly Simulation. Virtual assembly model espress the relationship between assembly parts effectively by the management of assembly parts and data; Assembly Sequence Planning provide one or more relatively optimal assembly sequence based on a variety of assembly model information with some optimization algorithm; Collision detection verify the feasibility of assembly, and provide the basis of assembly sequences; Assembly Simulation simulate the process by establish a visualization system.Collision detection is one of the key technologies of virtual assembly technology. During assembly simulation, it can provide strong data support for Assembly process planning by simulating every assembly process with Collision detection technology. With the help of bounding box and hierarchical bounding volume technology, it can quickly limit the basic detection to primitives; greatly improve the efficiency of Collision detection. With the deep research of kinds of collision detection algorithms domestic and international, integrating the features of the current virtual assembly system, this paper propose a new hierarchical bounding volume technique with the combination of AABB and OBB, then expounds the detail of algorithm implementation process:using AABB split the Bounding volume to construct the closer hierarchical bounding volume step by step, then update and detect by the way of OBB to achieve the purpose of speed up Collision detection.Finally, base on MFC application framework, OpenGL as the graphics interface, using Assembly Constrain Transformation model as model management system, build the Virtual Assembly system, implement hierarchical bounding volume technique with the combination of AABB and OBB, it can speed up the collision detection, verifying the feasibility of the algorithm.
