With the technology of computer and virtual reality becoming mature gradually, Virtual manufacturing technology has been developing progressively. Great attentions have been taken to the virtual assembly, which is one of the core technologies of virtual manufacturing and has been developed rapidly. Product design problems can be found out in time in the virtual environment through the virtual assembly process, and the procedure of the product assembly can be advanced ahead of time with this method. The other advantages of virtual assembly include the improvement of product model as a whole, development cycle reduced and the product quality improvement.The current development of virtual assembly domestic and overseas have been analyzed in this paper. The research plan of the immersive virtual assembly based on multi-channel VR displaying system has been proposed as a whole according to the experiment conditions, which includes virtual assembly system and the immersive virtual assembly environment design based on Onyx300. The concrete design of system planning has been researched deeply, which includes assembly model processing, man-machine interactive design, collision detection technology, multi-channel image connect processing and multi-channel stereo-vision visualization design. The immersive virtual assembly environment has been realized with the instruments of Onyx300 and the basic operations of virtual assembly with the OpenGL Performer graphics package.In the end, an assembly of shaft has been taken as a instance to realize the process of virtual assembly in the immersive virtual assembly environment. Assembly real-time operations of every part have been carried out by the operators at will, and the analysis of assemble performance and assembly procedure of planning can be realized through man-machine interactive and collision detection technology. The result in this research can meet the virtual assembly of planning as a group-discussion style, and the realization of the instance verifies the feasibility of virtual assembly design with the methods discussed in this paper.
