Poly(ester-imide), a kind of modified polyimide, are widely used in liquid crystal display, a flexible printed circuit, insulating wire coatings, solar cells, light-sensitive material, life and other fields because of excellent electrical properties, thermal properties and mechanical properties. Synthesis and process research of poly(ester-imide) using trimellitic anhydride as substrate were discussed in this paper. As N,N-dimethylacetamide was solvent and toluene was water-carrying agent, N-(4-carboxyphenyl)trimellitimide and N-(2-hydroxyethyl) trimellitimide were synthesized from trimellitic anhydride by reacting with para aminobenzoic acid and ethanolamine respectively; and effect of reaction time, concentration, volume ratio of water-carrying agent and solvent, molar ratio of raw materials on the yield were researched by single factor and orthogonal experiments in order to obtain the corresponding optimum conditions. Under this condition, the corresponding yields were98.39%and98.99%.As N,N-dimethylformamide was solvent and toluene was water-carrying agent, N-(2-carboxymethyl)trimellitimide was synthesized from trimellitic anhydride by reacting with glycine; and effect of reaction time, concentration, volume ratio of water-carrying agent and solvent, molar ratio of raw materials on the yield were researched by single factor and orthogonal experiments in order to obtain the optimum conditions. Under this condition, the corresponding yields was80.32%.Poly(ester-imide) PEI-P and PEI-G were synthesized from glycol by reacting with N-(4-carboxyphenyl)trimellitimide and N-(2-hydroxyethyl) trimellitimide respectively. Poly(ester-imide) PEI-E was synthesized from N-(2-carboxymethyl) trimellitimide. The solubility Parameters of PEI-P, PEI-G and PEI-E were11.64,11.44,11.35by group contribution method; the decomposition temperature of PEI-P, PEI-G and PEI-E were438.42℃,437.34℃,438.36℃by thermogravimetic analysis.
