As one of the most common insulation materials in current domestic market, extruded polystyrene (XPS) has the potential of fire hazard danger. The study of pyrolysis and analysis of XPS material and its response to fire is of great significance. This paper firstly used TG-DSC-FTIR-MS thermal analysis technique to test thermal decomposition of the material. On the basis of the experimental data, we obtained the kinetic parameters and the pyrolysis products of XPS. The activation energy of XPS in nitrogen, air and oxygen were respectively207kJ/mol,158kJ/mol and119kJ/mol. The pyrolysis products of XPS in nitrogen and air are of similar types, multiple kinds of hydrocarbon were occurred. In addition to, there is a large number of CO2occurred when in oxygen. The results show that the activation energy of XPS is low. The hydrocarbon pyrolysis can easily response and fueling the fire when in real combustion environment. Then the cone calorimeter was used on XPS to analyze the combustion behavior under different heat flux. The data obtained form CONE shows that with the increasing of the heat radiation flux the ignition time of material is shortened, the heat release rate increased, the fire risk of material increased too. Through the thick kindling heat model, we calculated that the critical heat flux is16.8kW/m2and the ignition temperature is283"C. The mass loss in cone calorimeter and pyrolysis has a certain correlation. Finally, we used the fire dynamics simulator (FDS) to carry on the fire process simulation analysis of XPS in ISO9705standard fire test room, and got the spread process of the ignited fire, flue gas flow and temperature distribution in the standard fire test room. The innovation of this article is using a variety of experimental techniques and mothods to study the pyrolysis behavior of XPS thermal insulation material. It is of great significance in the application of the material in the construction of the building and to provide theoretical and data support for the thermal insulation material evaluation.
