When processing the object surface, there are many smaller spacing, which we call them peaks and valleys and can not be recognized by naked eyes. The distance between the peaks and valleys is the object surface contour information, which belongs to the micro-geometry error. The degree of the surface smoothness of the workpiece is proportional to the degree of surface roughness of workpiece.The degree of the surface smoothness can often directly affect the performance of the workpiece. All in all, the roughness between the peaks and valleys of the surface of is an important indicator to measure the surface machining accuracy of the workpiece. For any two or more parts, the friction between the contact surfaces, wear between the workpiece, the degree of sealing, and the degree of fatigue of the parts will be affected by the values of the surface roughness. This paper designed a portable surface roughness measuring instrument which is suited to the production site or mobile measurement needing a small hand-held, The instrument has the values of wide range of high accuracy, more calculation parameters, simple operation and in accordance with ISO international standard requirements.This paper presents the development of portable surface roughness measuring instrument, and the micro-processer DSP of this portable surface roughness measuring instrument was generally described. The rough architecture of this machine was introduced in the rest part, software processing is the key point of this part. Data was processed in this part, which contain data filtering, parameters computing, DSP based digital filter design, Gaussan filter min-line generation, system error testing and error analysis. System hardware is also introduced in this paper.The experiment shows that portable surface roughness measuring instrument presented in this paper achieve our expected standards; it is convenience for users, fast measurement, high accuracy and stable. It is able to measure the main parameters of latest international standards.
