| James O’Connor (born1930, hereinafter O’Connor) is the most representative figure inmodern ecological Marxist theory. On the basis of historical ecological Marxism theories,O’Connor regarded social labor, nature and culture as an integrated system, proposed reconstructionof historical materialism, and expanded the historical materialism theories, which developed byMarx. By analyzed the capitalistic methods of production and the essence of capitalism, Jamespointed that there are dual contradictions in capital society, one is the contradiction of productivityand production relations, another is production relations and mode of production. And he believedthat the emergence of ecological crisis derives from the capitalist system, and the continuousexpansion of capital accumulation, the uneven joint development and the inappropriate techniqueapplication are the main reasons to produce ecological crisis. He also thought capitalist systemcannot overcome ecological crisis, so he proposed to construct socialism ecological civilization todefuse the crisis.Although O’Connor ideas about ecology Marxism remaining deficiencies, he helps people toachieve deeper understanding on modern Marxist developing direction, and has significantimplications for construction of ecological civilization. With a long-term perspective, his trinityviews of nature and history (nature, social labor and culture) help people have an overall andsystematic view of the relationship between human and nature, make rational use of resources, pushthe transformation economic growth form in China from extensive form to intensive form urgently,improve the technical development, and strengthen the quality of the labor force. Firmly taking thesocialist road, can we avoid the "capitalist mode of production", build a new ecological mode ofproduction, by the "distribution justice" to "productive" justice, promote social fairness and justice,resolutely resist "unbalanced, joint development", guide people to realize ecological consumption. |
