Ionic liquid has become a hot topic because of its favorable advantages such as high thermal stability, zero vapor pressure, wide liquid temperature range and the controllable solubility of both polar and non-polar substances. Butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) has been the most effective nonformaldehyde crosslinking agents for cotton fabric. In this article, the effect of the imidazolium ionic liquid, C8H15CIN2used in DP finishing with BTCA was studied and the catalytic mechanism of C8H15CIN2on esterification reaction was also investigated. The experimental results confirmed the wrinkle recovery angle of the fabric can be improved by the ionic liquid CgH15CIN2in both BTCA and BTCA/SHP system. All the technological conditions were determined though single-factor experimental analysis and the optimum conditions of each single factor was:BTCA:70g/L; SHP:15g/L; C8H15CIN2:3g/L; curing temperature:170℃; curing time:2.5min; pH:2.4-2.5. Based on the result of single factor experiments, a L16(45) orthogonal array experiment was carried out around five factors (BTCA concentration, SHP concentration, CgH15CIN2concentration, curing temperature, curing time) and four levels. The result showed that the order of the effect of all factors influencing wrinkle recovery angle was: curing time> BTCA concentration> curing temperature> SHP concentration> C8H15CIN2concentrations. While factors that influence the fabric tear strength are: curing temperature> BTCA concentration> curing time> C8H15CIN2concentration> SHP concentrations.Catalytic mechanism of C8H15CIN2in DP Finishing was analyzed by thermal gravimetric analysis (TG), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). TG curves indicated that C8H15CIN2could reduce the temperature at which the five-membered cyclic anhydride intermediates formed during the dehydration process of BTCA.1R spectra showed that fabric finished by BTCA mixed with C8H15CIN2has a higher degree of crosslinking with cotton than that without C8H15CIN2, which indicated the esterification reaction between BTCA and cotton fabric can be enhanced by C8H15CIN2. XRD demonstrated the crystal form and crystallization of fabric didn’t change after it finished by C8H15CIN2. It can be concluded by SEM that cotton fabric finished by C8H15CIN2with the concentration of20g/L has a significant swelling effect while with the concentration of3g/L doesn’t have an obvious swelling effect.
