Polymer materials are now widely used in various fields such as science and technology, the building of national defense and economy. Polymer materials having unique structure machines easily and is easy to be modified. Compared with other materials, polymer materials perform more excellent, which have become essential materials for all aspects in modern social life. With the continuous development of economy and society as well as people’s pursuit for better life, simple and traditional polymer materials can not meet the requirements of various industries. So polymer materials with excellent performance and different morphologies, such as asymmetric polymer particles, polymer particles and hollow core-shell structure polymer particles, become a hot current research. Asymmetric polymer particles and hollow polymer particles have been very extensively studied. Researchers have proposed a variety of preparation methods for particles with excellent performance and irregular morphology and while some products have also been used in the daily life, there were strict requirements for the instruments used in the experiments and it needs long preparation through the methods mentioned above. So these methods are not used in large-scale production and not beneficial for the wind range of application. By miniemulsion polymerization method polymer particles with irregular morphology can be achieved in shot time using simple experiment instruments. This paper prepared a series of different kind of polymer particles through one step using miniemulsion polymerization, and the exploration of the polymer particles’ morphology and application performance was carried. In the first part of this article, the characteristics and advantages of miniemulsion polymerization were described as well as preparation methods for different types of polymers by miniemulsion. Miniemulsion can not only be used for the preparation of monodisperse spherical polymer particles of nanoscale, but also for the preparation of other types of nanoscale particles such as hollow particles, mesoporous particles, core-shell particles and asymmetric structure particles. Then we focused on the pros and cons of several main preparation methods for Janus particles. The main methods for preparing Janus particles are microfluidic topological method, suriace modification method and self-assembly template method. There were strict requirements for the instruments used in the process of the preparation and it needs long preparation through the methods mentioned above. Preparation of Janus particles through miniemulsion polymerization is based on the principle of phase separation. By miniemulsion polymerization method Janus polymer particles can be achieved in shot time using simple experiment instruments. In the second part of this paper, polymethyl methacrylate was first prepared via miniemulsion. Then Janus polystyrene-methyl methacrylate was achieved by the dropwise addition of the second monomer styrene. This paper investigated the effects of the amount of cross linking agent, mass ratio of St and MMA and the dropping rate of St on the morphology of the Janus particles. In the third part of this paper styrene as monomer, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as emulsifier, divinylbenzene (DVB) as cross Unking agent, hexadecane (HD) as co-stabilizer and azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator agent were used to prepare asymmetric polystyrene microspheres through miniemulsion polymerization. Then polystyrene-acrylamide was achieved by the dropwise addition of the second monomer acrylamide. This paper investigated the effects of emulsifier concentration, mass ratio of paraffin and styrene and different initiators on the morphology of the polystyrene hemisphere particles. In the fourth part of this article hollow particles of poly (methyl methacrylate) was prepared by miniemulsion method. Experiments using alkyl diphenyl ether disulfbnate(DB-45) as polymerization emulsifier succeeded in preparing hollow particles through one step. This paper investigated the effects of different emulsifier, different monomer and emulsifier concentration on the morphology of the particles.
