With the advantages of low cost and energy consumption, environment friendly and sustainable development, natural fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (NFRT) have been getting great attention, its products are increasingly widely applied. However, there are still many problems should be solved. In this work, some basic problems in improving mechanical performance of composites were studied, including sheet preparation technology optimization, surface treatment of bamboo fiber, modification of matrix with bamboo fiber as reinforcing material and polypropylene as thermoplastic resin matrix. Based on the technology of "wet method making paper","water spread mat method" was proposed to prepare bamboo fiber mat and modified polypropylene matrix film was made by double screw extruder, with double steel belt compress machine bamboo fiber mat reinforced polypropylene (BMRP) composites sheets were prepared by melt impregnation method, finally sheets were secondary formed through compression moulding. The process parameters of composites sheets preparation and molding process were researched by orthogonal experiment method. Functional compatibilizer was added to modify the compatibility of polypropylene matrix with bamboo fiber, the effects of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MPP), glycidyl ester of acrylic acid grafted polypropylene (GPP), vinyl ethers grafted polypropylene (VPP) and MPP and VPP hybrid compatibilizer on the mechanical behavior of BMRP were studied, then the fracture surface of BMRP with and without modification BMRP were analyzed. The results show that functional compatibilizer improved BMRP interface bonding and enhanced the mechanical properties of BMRP. Bamboo fiber treated by room temperature alkali and microwave alkali respectively, the effects of alkali concentration and processing time on the mechanical behavior of BMRP were investigated and the function and mechanism of the microwave alkali treatment on fiber was discussed. The effects of fiber treatment with silane coupling agent KH-550on the mechanical behavior of BMRP fiber were also revealed. In this work, there are several innovative works include surface treatment of bamboo fiber, mat making, sheet preparation process and matrix modification. BMRP were studied systematically, and the mechanical properties of BMRP composites have been improved.
