This paper is the design and implementation of the relay protection in a300000ton/year acetic acid ethylene project. A large number of electricity load will be in this project, and the whole process belongs to the continuous natural gas chemical production device which has the characteristic like large production scale, high automation level, and etc. The interruption of power supply will cause great loss in the economy, the continuous production process disrupted, the main equipment damaged, the product scrapping or reducing, and etc. So this project has the higher requirements of the load’s continuous work. The project has large number of electric loads and circuits, and power supply system is complex. There are4step-down stations and some power distribution and supply rooms. The power supply system including35kV,10kV and0.4/0.23kV voltage level. This project has the exemplary significance for the design of relay protection system in further project.In this paper, according to the design and implementation of relay protection and its data acquisition and communication system in the300000ton/year acetic acid ethyl ene project, it will introduces the development of the relay protection system firstly. Then from the project requirements of relay protection system, it will confirm the overall design scheme, and introduce the hardware selection and functions of microcomputer protection module. By calculating short circuit parameters of the power supply system, it will ensure the setting and coordination of each type of relay protection, and then test its sensitivity, which can make sure the power supply system remove the faulty line under accident conditions and reduce the scope of accident as far as possible. By this, further damage to power supply and distribution system can be reduced, which will prevent the accident deteriorate and expand. Relay protection system, as a part of electric automation system, need to send the collected parameters to the control center at the sanme time. Through the design of data acquisition and communication system of relay protection system, it will meet he requirements of electric automation system for the data transmission.
