By2012, the total number of informal landfill and sanitary landfill in China wasmore than5000, Among them, the non-formal landfill of large scale also exceeded3000. Because of the construction of a large number of landfills in the late1980s,most of them have been achieved or will soon achieve their service lives. The impactand damage to the environment of abandoned landfills will not end immediately.Instead, they will cause serious pollution inside the site and near the site for quite along time.The abandoned landfill studied is located in the suburb of a northern capital city.It was started to use as the main urban waste landfill since1996, the stack area was226,000m2. It was officially abolished in March,2004. In order to find the effectivemethod to accelerate the degradation of domestic garbage in a short time aiming toremedy and reuse the site as soon as possible, the study aims at organic matter contentof domestic garbage, the effect of leaching and degradation efficiency of domesticgarbage bioreactor in different conditions, tries to determine the most appropriatetreatment method to repair the abandoned landfill. Besides, by monitoring theremoval efficiency of landfill leachate contaminants of the reactor which carried outleachate recirculation operation under anaerobic, anoxic, semi-aerobic conditions, thestudy aims to find a suitable solution to remove leachate. It is hopeful that through thestudy, it can supply experimental and theoretical foundation for landfill remedy innorthern area. The results showed:(1) Organic matter content of the domestic garbage was generally low, mostlybetween11%-15%. It indicated a higher degree of degradation of domestic garbagein the site, the remaining biodegradable organic matter content was not high.(2)When using leaching methods to repair the site, the concentration of effluent COD was high in previous five days, the physical leaching was dominant at this stage, itwas better to adopt anaerobic dipping; after five days, it entered the stage ofdegradation mainly in biodegradation, it had long duration and low COD effluentconcentration, the results were more stable by using semi-aerobic method at this stage.It also can use by increasing ventilation or water inflow to promote speed andefficiency of the repair site.(3) By calculation it showed that the amount of organicmatter removal of domestic garbage can only reach about1%of the total organicmatter remaining after a month of leaching experiments, it described thatbiodegradable organic matter content in the studied abandoned landfill was very small,most of the remaining organic matter was refractory organics, and the nature wasrelatively stable.(4) Leachate recharge experiment was carried out for domesticgarbage of old age, the results showed that for domestic garbage of old age inanaerobic, anaerobic-aerobic and aerobic hydrolysis reactor. Overall, the removalefficiency of the pollutants in aerobic reactor was the best, especially the removalefficiency of NH4-N and the stability was the best.
